I would like to take a moment and strongly advise any of my friends who enjoyed either the Percy Jackson or Harry Potter books to check out The Hound of Rowan by Henry Neff. I mentioned it in my last post but I am nearly halfway through now and am hooked. It uses a lot of the same tropes of PJ&tO and HP but it really comes across as it's own book. What's interesting is the heroes are initiated/called to their new life by a vision and typically this vision is of a past hero. What's nice about this device is that the vision also serves as a warning for the aspiring hero as to what dangers or weaknesses to watch out for.
