I started The Paper Magician and am enjoying it. It has a definite Howl's Movie Castle vibe, or maybe even Christomancy. I hesitate to say a Diane Wynn Jones vibe as I haven't read enough of her works to say. I do have to grump about it for just one second, though it's not about the book or the narration; I'm listening to the audiobook.
The whole reason I got it was the series was on sale in Kindle+Audiobook sets for like $6 each book, and what the heck right? The sale only applied to the second and third books though, but I figured I could find the first online from my library. This turned out to not be true, so I looked at Audible and low and behold, they had it on sale for $2. Win!
In buying it I happen to notice the top review, which seems to be the top as 60 out of 67 people marked it as helpful. I didn't. The review is as follows:
As soon as she started speaking I flinched. She sounds manic, as if she drank several cups of coffee before narrating. Her voice was so shaky and shrill I couldn't listen to the story.
I'll admit, i was apprehensive as I started the book, but I have to disagree with this person. In fact, I seriously disagree with them. Yes, the narrator is energetic and youthful, but guess what, so is the main character the person is reading and that character is the point of view! It's like people forget what it was like to be a 19 year old, although the cynical part of me wonders if the same book had a male lead that was 19 and was read in a similar manner if it'd get the same review.
Still, great book so far and worth reading!
