So I've another clash between super powers and physics. In Jumper: Griffin's Story and the clips I've seen of the movie Jumper, momentum seems to be constant when the jumper jumps (teleports); for instance, in a climactic fight with Samuel L. Jackson in a desert, Griffin jumps himself and a double-decker bus at him, which likely is the only way you might have a chance of taking out Samuel L. Jackson.

However, several times in the book, Griffin jumps while on a train or bus in order to shake off the Paladin's ability to track his jumps and he does this without breaking any bones or seemingly account for the train/bus (and thus his) momentum. So in RPGs, books, movies or video games, can anyone think of a failsafe mentioned that could account for this? Or do I just handwave it and pretend Griffin waited until the train or bus slowed enough he could jump and run to counter his momentum?

Also, while I loved Jumper: Griffin's Story, I'm not liking Jumper much. The protagonist is put through several icky situations that really make me wonder about the author. I'm talking like Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) or Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider) level of ick here. I may just skip the original book and read the novelization of the movie instead.

Okay now really I've work to do.

Think about it like relative momentum? In relation to what he's standing on, he himself is not moving. Just the surroundings are.

I can kind of manage to handwave that.

Because if you're going to count momentum of what you're standing on, every time he jumps he has to counteract the earth's momentum. I doubt that is happening, so it's probably something similar with the train. As long as he's not taking the train or bus WITH him, he's fine.
