Jan. 2nd, 2018 09:29 amI don't have a good history with resolutions, so I'm not bothering this year. Instead I will dedicate myself to being courageous and kind. I figure if I can manage those two, other things will take care of themselves.
I'm also not a fan of "Top Ten things of the year" and such lists. Part of this is I prefer to look forward and part is that New Year's Day is my birthday and that's just too much work. ;p
I had a good birthday yesterday. The Wife, Her Ladyship, and I mostly just hung out. I got an orange meringue pie from the M-i-L which was thoughtful and tasty. We also saw Justice League and then went for crepes after for dinner. Mmmmmm crepes. I got Greek inspired ones and a Nutella, strawberry and banana desert one to share.
I ended up liking Justice League, despite Whedon. Yes, there were forced sexy with the women in the movie, most ofter it was eye rolling and awkward. I *loved* Barry and thought Ezra Miller did an excellent job with him. The film did drag for the first third. I feel it was due to the villain's set up, while my daughter felt it was due to character introductions and team set up. The humor was nice to have, though I feel it was low hanging fruit and could've been much better. I loved Aquaman ribbing Bats, Barry, and Cyborg, though I would've loved more of who he was. He was pretty closed off. The comic nods were fun and I loved the beginning of the Flash/Superman races.
Vlad update: I am loving Hawk so much! I am up to chapter 05 now and I can't wait to see if Vlad pulls off what it seems like he's trying. It's always fun to try and figure out what Vlad's plan is and I both love and hate that Brust always teases details with the reader but never gives them away until they happen.

whiskers_and_scales (Vlad is called whiskers as a slur by Dragerians and Loiosh is a reptile.)
lord_jhereg (A nod to Vlad's titles (he is a baronet of House Jhereg, as well as being an Imperial Count later in the books), and a reference to him, i.e. Lord, and Loiosh, who is a Jhereg)

I could've missed this in earlier books of course.

Date: 2018-01-05 03:56 pm (UTC)I also finished Hawk and OMG, it was so good! I love that Vlad figured out how to make a truce with the Jhereg but failed to see that his plans didn't protect him from the Left Hand. Excellent heist/plotting and an exceptional fail.
About two chapters into Vallista and hooked. Gothic mystery, if not horror, this time!

Date: 2018-01-05 04:17 pm (UTC)Yes! I loved that both as a thing I could definitely see Vlad doing, and for a 'Hawk' moment -- so fixated on getting all the little clever details of his heist to go just right, that he totally missed the glaring gap where he hadn't though about the Left Hand at all. :D
Vallista was a little bit of a letdown for me after Hawk, because I'm not a big fan of gothics as a genre, but I enjoyed it anyway, and hope you will continue to also. Some interesting worldbuilding bits, too, or at least a better look at what has been mentioned/implied before.

Date: 2018-01-05 04:30 pm (UTC)I am enjoying it as I love a good haunted house. As long as the prose doesn't get too purple, I should be good. = ]
Also, I made a post about faces for characters here. Thoughts?
