I would suggest checking out Paper Magician from a library if you can. I think if you can read it as the person being much more of a teen than the 19 years she's supposed to be, you can forgive some of her enthusiasm. Honestly, these books would make more sense if the character were 15 growing into 18, but then the romance would be creepy rather than just questionable. But I have found them to be a fun light read, not much more though.
There is surprise gore, in case that is something to consider for you. It reads very Victorian to me, though it's set at the turn of the century.
