Soul Eater
Apr. 26th, 2020 11:01 amI'm giving the anime Soul Eater another chance...still not sold on it. I'm three episodes in and welll...see below.
The Good:
I like that one of the main protagonists, and the first one we meet, is a girl. This is somewhat unique coming from a shonen manga turned anime.
The art style is fun as well...sort of Marilyn Manson meets the Insane Clown Posse; although I saw one person describe it as punk meets grunge. I don't see this but your mileage may vary.
The fight scenes are very dynamic and cool, though some character's make weird choices in using their weapons. Holding handguns upside down to fire is never a good idea, but using your pinky on the trigger? Sorry, my disbelief will only go so far.
The Bad:
As I said above, it is based on a shonen manga, which means sexualized shots of women characters and misogynistic "humor". I hope this tones down in later episodes.
The humor is very madcap manic absurd and all the boys seem to act like how a middle school boy would think cool is. The girls seem pretty good as a rule, though there is one who seems stuck in a motherly role.

It is an odd choice to have the first three episodes be prologue to set up your main three protagonists and the world. At least the show is self aware enough to say the actual story will start next episode at the end of the third episode.
I think I will give it three more episodes. I wish I could figure out if the setting is some sort of AU mortal world like ours or an after life, cause I swear they had a Jack the Ripper and Al Capone existing at the same time. And the sun and moon are literal faces that change expressions.
