So I watched the live action, Western remake of Ghost In The Shell and oddly, I do not regret having watched it. Thoughts and spoilers behind the cut.
First up, the Gaijin in the room, Scarlet Johansson's casting and performance. I went into the movie thinking an Asian actress, preferably Japanese, should have been cast in the role of Major and I left with pretty much the same thought. I'd have liked to have seen Rinko Kikuchi in the role as I felt her performance in Pacific Rim was excellent and would not have been a big stretch for the Major. I was not too impressed with Scarlet's performance. The fight choreography was great but I felt she thought emotionally reserved meant emotionally dead. I barely felt any emoting from her at all. I know she is a good actress but I think she missed a few subtleties of the role and Japanese culture as reflected in anime. Or maybe the director did.
Regardless, I did enjoy the film. I was not wowed, but it was fun.
The story was simplistic and the "big twist" wasn't all that really. It just felt like something I'd seen many times before. Still, the CGI was very pretty and the fight scenes were fun, though they did seem to like showing Scarlet in the cyborg skin and nothing else. Maybe I don't remember the anime that much, to be honest Ghost in the Shell: SAC comes to mind more readily, but I don't remember that much no-really-it's-not-nudity.
Maybe that's how they we hoping to make a killing in teh box office, the chance to sort of but not really see Scarlet nude? I don't know. I am pretty convinced the whole reason she was cast was to be a name draw as I am sure all the money in the film went to CGI and her compensation.
I loved the music, a lot. It was really good for me.
I think that's about it. Fun movie, but could've been better.
