Book recommendations
Jan. 26th, 2011 07:41 amFirst up, for the younger crowd, I would highly recommend The Book of Story Beginnings by Kristin Kladstrup. Very fun, this books has hints of Lemony Snicket, Inkheart and Roald Dahl. I would say this is appropriate for 8+ and is a good challenge for a third or fourth grade reading level. I am about half way through and so far the only potentially scary things are the father disappearing, a boy gets magically kidnapped but returns in the future, his family all long dead. The boy addresses his feelings but doesn't wallow in them. Strong lead female character who takes action to rescue her father on her own with no prompting. The mother is a bit harried and might come across as uptight but this is because she is the primary money maker in the family.
And next up, Johannes Cabal by Jonathan L Howard. The first book in the series is Johannes Cabal the Necromancer followed by Johannes Cabal the Detective. Definitely not for the kids but maybe for teens. Imagine if Terry Pratchet were feeling morbid one day as he sat down to write or perhaps if Charles Adams had wrote prose and you'd get a good idea of the writing style of these books, lots of fun wit and morbid humor. And if that weren't enough, the first book was inspired by Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes.
