Brief thoughts on the day
Jul. 8th, 2011 11:49 amI watched when the Apollo 11 landed on the moon. I was seven months old and watched it on TV but I don't remember it much.
I watched when the Voyager probes were launched towards the outer reaches of our solar system and dreamed of what it could be like to be so far out there.
I watched when the space shuttle Enterprise first began test flights and swelled with pride at the idea of a reusable space craft just like in the movies and books.
I watched when the space shuttle Columbia launched into space and nearly exploded with excitement that "we" had done it.
I watched when the Challenger exploded and cried with crushed dreams and sorrow for the lives lost.
I watched when Discovery launched and brought us back to our future.
I watched when Columbia disintegrated upon reentry and reopened the old wound left by Challenger.
And I watched today when Atlantis launched, the last of the space shuttle program, and I feel let down that we don't have any other craft to fill its place.
