I reread the Death of Phoenix last night and I just have to say, Storm was kind of..well, sanctimonious isn't quite the right word but it's close. She constantly thought of Jean as little one and little girl, which considering Jean is of equal age and thus a peer if not her senior--since Jean had been an X-men much longer than Storm--just feels odd if not offensive. Granted Storm never said it out loud but given Jean's a telepath, she had to have known. It's likely meant as a enduring term but still.
Also, it is so easy to tell when Jim Shooter was Editor In Chief as there was so much exposition and everyone had to explain their powers every issue. I can sort of see Mr. Shooter's stance that anyone should be able to pick up a comic and dive right into the story without having to read previous issues but I think it can go too far. Like, does Cyclopes really need to say or think how dangerous it is to remove his glasses/visor every time he does it?
For the death, I thought it was a nice touch to have nearly all of the original X-Men present though I do wonder what Bobby/Iceman was up to that he couldn't join in. I mean Beast bugged out on the Avengers, couldn't Bobby take a break from the Defenders or Champions or whomever he was hanging out with?
