Lessons in sewing

So I thought I understood sewing enough to draft a simple pattern. All seemed good. I made the pattern, cut the fabric, sewed the piece and then had the Spawn try it on and she couldn't even pull the hakama (a type of Gi pants in case you don't know what they are) up to her waist.
Cue my tempter tantrum and diva-tude. After picking myself up, apologizing to everyone and explaining I was mad at myself and no one else, I went to the store and found a pattern.
Take two was much better. So lesson learned, at my present level of skill, DO NOT try to draft a pattern, alter an existing one.
In other news, I finally got my hands on One Salt Sea and OMG beautiful work as always.
seanan_mcguire's writing is so awesome. She immediately sucks you into her world and does it so well you get grumpy when people interrupt the story. Very much looking forward to the next book.
