A bit of a ramble.
Nov. 16th, 2011 09:30 amI think I need to take a break from super hero comics. Lately the stories have been lack luster (Civil War, Secret Invasion, Fear Itself) and same old, same old. Series that did have good writing or seemed promising have been canceled (X-23, Victor von Doom, Destroyers, i.e. She-Hulk and Ben kicking butt in the same comic again) and I just feel let down. I know Marvel blames pirated digital downloading for the cancellations but I can't help wondering if that isn't just a knee jerk reaction.
And I am so over Norman Osborn as a world threat villain. Sorry, I didn't buy it for Dark Reign and I'm not going to buy it now. I'm also tired of Ben Grimm suffering form the Worf effect.
So I'm looking to more independent sources for my comic fix (Image, Dark Horse, Red 5) and am open to titles I should be checking out. I know I need to read Chew and Air, as well as Atomic Robo and BPRD.
Also, while I am enjoying Batwoman, please don't bother suggesting DC titles. I've tried DC, really I have, but for me they are great for movies and TV but the printed media just doesn't grab me.
I'm actually disenchanted enough I'm thinking of "retiring" some of my comic pups from Milliways. 616 Ben has been on and off the chopping block for awhile now. The events of Fear Itself, the many titles he's been in and trying to reconcile when each of these appearances into a timeline is just proving too much for me. I love the fact that he is getting so much exposure, I just don't feel up to incorporating it into Milliways and I feel I owe it to continuity to do so.
Jessica Drew is another who seems really quiet. I wish her solo title had continued or that she was more than the costumed equivalent of a Sex and the City episode. All she seems to do is sit around bemoaning her lack of relationships. What happened to the awesome super spy, alien hunter I fell in love with?
And with the cancellation of X-23, there will be no solo titles dedicated to a female character. I miss the days of the She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Spider-woman titles. I also miss the days when Marvel was really pushing the boundaries of comic writing and not just rehashing old troupes.
