The Iron Thorn by Caitlin KittredgeMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice mix of Lovecraft mythos, faerie and Bronte-esk propriety. The action was fast paced, the characters enjoyable and understandable. What really impressed me with this book was that in creating this world, the author relied on the Thesaurus for descriptive nouns rather than making up words which added depth and an immediate sense of familiarity to the world. I do wish she had found another word for jitney but then again we use car repeatedly in our dialog.
I will be honest, about a third of the way through I was thinking of putting the book down as I was getting bored, the Lovecraftian themes having become stale to me. Within the next chapters though the author introduced the Fae and that spiced and refreshed the story enough to recapture my attention. I look forward to reading the sequel.
Also, I listened to the audiobook and the narration is very good.

Knight Errant by John Jackson MillerMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
I enjoyed this book though I can see how having read the first comic series (Star Wars: Knight Errant, Aflame) might be needed. The story doesn't require you to have read the comic but the character development does. This book is more about world building and action rather than character background. There is character development but again you wouldn't see it if you hadn't read the comic first. This really is the second of a trilogy, the first and third books just happen to be the comics. The story does stand on it's own.
