The Wall of Silence

I forgot to mention that last Wednesday I got new hearing aids! I've always had trouble with my hearing, a genetic disposition plus sever ear infections as a child tend to lead to that, but it's just something I've accepted. It's just who I am right? It's not sever loss. If normal hearing were a bell curve, I have trouble with the two bottom ends but tend to do okay with the middle. It was enough to keep me from the Navy when I was young and didn't see any other option for my future. Nothing against the military, I just don't think we would have been a good fit together.
Anyway, I've had one hearing aid before, for my right ear and the people around me immediately noticed a big difference as I took part in conversations. Hearing aids are pricey, like $900 - $1,400 a piece, which was why I only got the one. A while ago I lost it, which sucked and all but it turned out well as Costco was having a big promotion and I was able to get a pair of the $1,400 ones for $1,900.
And now...wow. The best I can describe it is when you know you need glasses but you get by, making allowances and guesses as to what the world is like. Then you finally get a pair of glasses and the world is suddenly in sharp focus. The fog lifts and you don't feel isolated any longer. I even think the ringing I'm used to hearing fades while I wear the devices.
