On Strange and Norrell
Nov. 12th, 2013 09:30 pm I am definitely loving the book, though not with a much fire or passion as I have with other novels. I believe my greatest challenge has been adjusting to the language; though now that I have, I find it creeping into my letters.
I am quite certain Mr. Norrell is mad, though perhaps not as mad as King George or a Hatter for that matter. I do like Mr. Strange and find myself thinking of names for journals; such as chevalier_of_wands or knight_of_wands. Oddly enough, I find both are unclaimed!
I find I am unsure of the casting of Bertie Carvel for the role of Mr. Strange. As I listen to the story, I find myself picturing Hugh Grant or perhaps a young Julian Sands (especially from Gothic), though I do believe Mr. Sands' hair is wrong for the role. James McAvoy, especially from Becoming Jane has occurred to me but I dare say Mr. McAvoy is too short. John Cussack in his portrayal of Mr. Poe (from the recent movie The Raven) would be tempted as well and damn the time period.
ETA: Well, damn me for a fool. I had thought Mr. Poe was from a later period than the events of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell but he is in fact a contemporary!

Date: 2013-11-13 03:36 pm (UTC)I'm to the point where Norrell and Strange have parted company, for the first time?
I find I do like John Cusack for Strange but his role in The Raven was too somber for J. Strange, I fear.
Actually, it occurred to me that Strange hasn't been described as having whiskers. However, I did note Luke Evans from the same movie works very well for me.
