Things that are annoying me, part?

 So my daughter's boyfriend told her in text that she isn't Goth. Apparently you have to have lots of piercings and long crazy hair and wear lots of eyeliner and listen to heavy, crazy rock music. I am a little peeved to say the least. I keep trying to tell her to just tell him he doesn't get to define her or tell her what Goth is, but she has homework to finish so that conversation is going to have to wait.

I honestly think the kid is just being foolish with words but he needs to be educated.

Nobody gets to define what other people are; arrogating the sovereignty of interpretation over others is what people like Hannibal Lecter do.

Also, that little ignoramus has never heard of geek goths and perky!goths, it seems...

Definitely! I think I am reacting so strongly to it as I hated all the snippy fights online about what is goth in the late 90s.

I am going to approach it calmly once the opportunity presents itself but I have been telling my daughter over and over, no one gets to define you but you.

ETA: I will admit, my wife and I were ready to start sending him links to Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy and the Damned as ask where all the piercing were.

Well, that is interesting. I have no problem with it but I do wonder at the lengths people will go to cling to labels. I've known many goths who took extra care in exercise and eating right who never felt the need to label themselves as anything beyond goth.
