Óðinn receives half of those chosen by the Valkyries in battle; Freyja- who is occasionally listed as a Valkyrie herself- gets first pick and takes half to her hall Sessrúmnir. The implication I've seen in a few places is that if there is any reliable split determining who goes where, it's that Freyja picks the ones who fight for home and country and Óðinn the ones who fight for expansion and glory- basically, the protective and defensive fighters- although I'm not a proper scholar of Norse poetry nor do I personally know any Asatruar, so I could be interpreting it wrong. Anyway, point is, if you go with that assumption about Freyja's selection of the slain, sooner or later I could see her going "Look, when I started doing this, there were a lot fewer slain to choose from and I could pick through them myself. You. Son of Wil. I'm delegating you to pick for me. I'll get you a- oh, you can fly already, great, that's covered then."
And now I am imaging Sam's first day of training with the Valkyrie and how later the other Valkyries decide they want wings as well (though they don't retire their steeds of course), thus defining themselves from Odin's Valkyries even more.
