Some good news to spin out of the problematic (for Eliot) finale of The Magicians that I talked about last week.
Saw this on Tumblr and I think I will keep it in my back pocket to use if the show doesn't.
What I want for Eliot and Fen short of never having happened is probably not going to happen, but a girl can dream.
I want her to be a lesbian like she was in the book. I also want her to be an amazing fight expert like she was in the book.
Now for the show, I want her to be covertly so at the start. Her father has always used her as a pawn in his ambition, as a projection of his father’s legacy, the way he sees himself. He’s always told her that she is defined by her family, by legacy, by her use to it.
So she loved other girls in the village in secret, never at home. She stole the finished knives and taught herself to use them before the commissioners picked them up again. She sparred the boys and girls who got to grow up to be warriors in her town and she kept at it ‘til she won. But she always kept it quiet, to keep her father happy.
And I want her and Eliot to just talk on their wedding night, for her to tell him this, and I want him to understand, and tell her that she’s not defined by coming from a farm village where people try and decide who you are. He understands that so well it hurts. And I want him to tell her she can create herself to be whoever she wants–fuck her father and his boner over legacies.
And I want her to cut off all her hair and become a female knight, and I want her and Eliot to fight against the binding clause of the marriage together, because no one gets to tell the King or his new chief of defense/ex-wife who to be.
And I want them to be super best friends, happily ever after.
