Problems I create for myself....
Apr. 20th, 2016 10:04 amThinking of making a journal for Bartimaeus from the Bartimaeus Sequence books. Already have a name picked out and am looking at icons. As I've been reading the books, he scans as black to me; when he deigns to appear human. I know in the first book he at least takes on the appearance of an Egyptian he knew, Ptolemy. Going by the name, I would guess the Egyptian would be from the time period when the Greeks had mixed with the Royal line, so a more Mediterranean skin tone might be called for. I know he seems to prefer youths when he takes on human forms, though he's taken the form of a woman at least once.
I've found a couple of black PBs I like, only one of which is not a teenager. I've also found a few Mediterranean looking peeps, since he does take on an Assyrian form in the book I am currently reading. I keep finding attractive PBs but they are too old. I keep having to remind myself he only takes on youthful forms. I still think I will keep Harold Perrineau for when he's dealing with entities of greater power ,assuming he is trying to appear equal to them and not using the youth form to seem less a threat or worthy of pity and mercy.
Half the challenge in finding faces has been the need for them to be youthful, and seeming cheeky, witty, mischievous, or snarky; not to mention being brown or dark skinned.
The trials of a shape shifting pup and DW's 15 icon limit. I could always not have a default icon and use Imageshack to link appropriate images to.

Date: 2016-04-20 07:48 pm (UTC)Pros of Bartimaeus: Snark and wit, strong personality, shape shifting, magic, not going to be tied with canon (i.e. I don't mean to run him through canon but might mention things happening), despite all his wry comments actually does like humans. Mining five thousand years of history.
Cons: Like I have time for the pups I have now? Haven't read all of the source canon yet, I've finished the first and am reading the fourth book which is more prequel.
Faces: (Note to self, remember Bartimaeus is picky about the forms he wears. Trim down the faces.)
His pure Jinn face will be Harold Perrineau, as I mentioned.
Teen faces: Avan Jogia (leaning towards him for Ptolemy), Cykeem White, and Ezra Miller.
Kid face: Kaizer Akhtar.
Female: Gina Torres, though Im not finding teenage Gina. I need to look father. I should hit the Dallies.
I imagine he is not going to give his proper name at first, not trusting the humans of Milliways. I also see him being very untrusting of any who seem to be magicians.
Yrael will read as some thing beyond a Marid, I think, as will any gods or angels. I am tempted to look at the Stroud-verse through an Arabic lens, by which I mean there are men, jinn, and angels; though the book never mentions angels. The book never describes demons or devils, at leas the Western or Christian definition of such, though the jinn and other spirits are called demons by human magicians. Demon is viewed by spirits as a pejorative term and do not like it.
Bartimaeus, like other jinn, can see into all of the canon's seven planes. Within Milliways, I think I am going to have there be more than seven planes and they all look weird and give him a headache if he looks too long. This will be a mechanical means to allow other characters to some power over Barimaeus if the situation calls for it, i.e. he might not be able to see through illusions and such within Milliways. Also, magic from other words will be weird to him and he may not see through it well.

Date: 2016-04-20 09:02 pm (UTC)1) Full Jinn face (not his true form), 2) Ezra Miller (Sumerian face? I don't know, I just like Ezra's face. I may need to change to a Persian actor), 3) Avan Jogia (Ptolemy face, added advantage of modern clothes and Egyptian costume), Cykeem White (just cause), and Zoe Kravitz (for when a boy's face doesn't seem like it will work).
And for when he needs extra sympathy or to seem harmless, Kaizer Akhtar and Quvenzhané Wallis
