I think of myself as a feminist and aware of when I do or assume anti-feminist things, but I had a bit of a wake up last night. I've not been shy about how much I am looking forward to Star Wars Rebels and am already quite taken by Sabine Wren, so of course I must share this with my partner in geeky crimes, Her Ladyship! We did this with Studio Ghibli, with Young Justice, with the Nicholas Flemel series, Captain Marvel, other comics and much more; so nothing new.
I had thought Rebels was pretty good with the balance of female vs male, not ideal with three males and two females (I refuse to categorize an astromech into a gender), and, hey. one of the females is even the pilot of the ship and nominal leader! Awesome right? Well, last night, while showing the 60 seconds trailer to my daughter, I had the harsh reminder that even though there are women characters, they are not in focus as I had thought. As we watched I was hard pressed to show her more than flashes of the females as the trailer transitioned to the guys for dramatic action. It really seemed like the gals only about about 10 seconds of those 60 to show themselves. And I didn't clue into this until I tried to get my daughter excited about them.
Privilege is so damned sneaky. Still she does think it looks neat and wants to watch it come September. And in case you were wondering, I did apologize to my daughter for not realizing how little screen time the ladies got and not warning her about it. I also promised to show her the clips that are character spotlights and thus will just be about Sabine and Hera.
