I've finally started watching Titans on DC Universe and I think I am liking it. I'm only on the second episode. More thoughts behind the cut in case they count as spoilers, though I will be vague and mostly talk about things that I am assuming happened before the show.

The biggest challenge the show is having for me is that it is violent, and I am not talking standard superhero rockem-sockem. There were multiple deaths in the first episode at the hands of Dick, Raven, and Kori. On one hand, I get it. They are trying to make it more realistic and when you are talking about the skills and powers these guys possess, deaths are easy to have happen. But it made me doubtful as part of the good guys shtick is that you don't kill needlessly and several of these deaths, likely the first if my memory servers, were needless.

I decided to give it a chance though, as I liked some of the differences they were heading with the story compared to the comics and I think I am liking where they are going.

First, let's talk about Dick. He is post-Batman here and if I remember my DC lore correctly, Dick originally left Bats because he felt Bats was being too violent with the criminals he was fighting. In this, Dick left because he was becoming too much like Bats, and given the fight scene they gave Dick and the deaths I am assuming happened (they are very PG-13 with the violence and not spotlighting too much) I think that violence has 'infected' Dick. He talks about leaving the super hero life behind, and yet carries the briefcase with the Robin gear with him everywhere. Even other heroes are showing concern for how violent Dick is being, in this case it was Hawk of Hawk and Dove. Now my first instinct is this is wildly out of character for Dick, but they are also touching on his childhood trauma and are very clear to show his violence is not good, so I am thinking they are going to have him work through some trauma and address the violence. At least I hope that is where they are heading. It feels like that to me at least. Which I am all for.

I do like what they are doing with Raven/Rachel, although it feels weird her being a teen to Dick's obvious early 20s.

Kori, or Kory Anders as her passport reads, is still vague enough I am giving them a chance. I do hope the carefree soul I'm used to from the TV shows comes out, but so far she is not there. Granted she was not in episode 02. I do remember early reactions to her costuming choices, and I have to say it works for where she is in the story.

Garfield has just shown up in one brief scene, the one where he's a tiger in the video game store scaring the crap out of that security guard. Nothing to say there.

So I do hope we get more of Dick questioning his actions. It seems like it is happening as Raven has called him on planning to leave her behind when he promised he wouldn't. So there's accountability there.
