Swelling with pride and shame
Nov. 5th, 2008 09:33 amThis morning I am proud to be an American. We have elected a talented, qualified and intelligent man who happens to be African American. There is something wonderfully poetic about the fact that the same state that gave us President Lincoln to heal our torn country more than 150 years ago also has given us American's first non-caucasian President.
We also chose to elect a Democratic majority into both Houses of Congress. These are truly hopeful times and I have a fervent wish that that hope isn't misplaced. I dearly hope that in the coming years, the Democratic controlled Congress and Presidency does just throw money at problems to make them go away. That they heal the rifts in diplomacy the past decade has caused with the rest of the world. That they can reach across the isle and work with Republicans to save this Union.
A miracle happened tonight, please let it happen again in 4 years and every year of those four.
I am also ashamed this morning. Ashamed to be a California. To live in a state where bigotry has won the right to tell two people who love each other they can't be married. I don't know what I can do to change that but I will keep my eyes open for the chance.
I thank Zeus and Athena for making every vote be counted truthfully and with clarity.
And lastly, I must say, Athena Poliuchus I pray lend your Aegis, lend your piercing gaze to the Secret Service. Let President Elect Obama make history not as the fifth President to be assassinated nor the eighteenth attempted. Do this and I shall give you honors ever month of Presdident Obama's term, be it four years or eight.
