Three things I learned today...
1> ALWAYS bring your bike tools with you on a ride.
2> ALWAYS listen to yourself and your instincts.
3> ALWAYS laugh.

Today started with front tire fixed and ready to go. I was to ride up to our Cat Vet and finally pick up Romeo's remains, left over from yesterdays failed errand running.

I got as far as four blocks from the Vet when my rear tire blows out. (Isn't this great Yen? You get Detour Trauma, I get Tire Trauma.)

After all the hell I went through yesterday, I just had to laugh. What's even better is when I recently replaced the rear tire I bought a new inner-tube for it but decided not to install it because the old one seemed to be working fine. At least this time I was near two bicycle shops =]

So I walk the bike to the nearest one, which is only two blocks away. As I walk into the parking lot I realize I have no tools to change the tire! So I buy an inner-tube and the tire bars. Walk the bike over to the Rotten Robbie's next store and get set to change the tire.

It is then that I realize I don't have a pair of pliers to take the tire off the frame.

So I lock up the bike and walk back to the Bike shop to see if they would loan me one. The guy is nice enough to loan me a pair of channel locks but seems confused when I describe the type of bolts that are holding my tires on. I fix the tire and discover that if I had had a tire patch kit with me I could have avoided the cost of the new inner-tube. Oh well it was only $8 and a good lesson.

So I take the bike and the channel locks back to the bike shop and show the guy what is holding the tires onto my frame. He talks one look and points out that they are quick release bolts that use an allen wrench rather then the handles like most bikes. He also points out that I need to adjust my front brake which I knew about, I didn't do a good job of adjusting it after I replaced the front tire that morning. So I ask him if these brakes are quick release or not. He pulls the rubber covering the wires back and shows me that yes in fact they are. I feel properly dumb at this point.

So I thank him and head on my way. Get to the Vet and they are closed for lunch. I have to wait at least half an hour. Time for more laughter. I get some lunch then head back to get the remains and head back home. About half an hour from home I get squishie guts. Funny how much faster you can peddle when you have the right inspiration.

So I get home take care of necessary business and then have a good chuckle at my own expense.

All and all it is still SD-2.

In other news, one of the Greats of Sci_Fi and Fantasy has passed away. Poul Anderson's no longer with us and world is a little dimmer without him. Here's his obit if you want to read it: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2001/08/02/obituary1113EDT0073.DTL
