bjornwildeSo the spawn wants to Aiofe (from the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series) and her BFF wants to Scathach, easy right? Not quite. Neither kid has bright red hair and neither kid is a vampire. Plus in the books neither character really has a distinctive costume, they simply dress in clothing that is easy and practical to fight in. Actually Scathach tends towards casual while Aoife goes for suits but same different as far as the fourth grade goes.
So what to do? Well we've worked out that they will wear the Gi practitioners of Aikido wear, plastic vampire teeth and then the night of they will spray their hair red. The spawn also has a couple of matching swords that light up for them to be armed with. This leaves me with making hakama (the baggy, skirt like Gi pants) for them and while I've found instructions and a drawn pattern, I still get to draft the damn thing to their size. Did I mention that I've never really drafted a pattern before? And can I say doing this while in the middle of a sugar crash is not a good idea? Needless to say no fabric has been cut. At least it is a simple pattern.
I also want to be Iroh for Halloween and it's looking like I will get more practice drafting patterns as I am finding nothing. And let's not forget the wig and beard. Why do I start this only a week before the event?
