"I can't accept this," Captain John Cooper said with disgust as he threw the letter of resignation onto his desk.
"'Fraid you don't have much choice," Lieutenant Joshua Nolan replied, standing at a parade rest; though he held his belt buckle with his right hand. An old habit he picked up to seem relaxed. "I passed my length of service two years ago–-you know that--anything else is voluntary."
"This cause of that girl? I sympathize but she belongs in an orphanage, not with you. You're a solder not a father. You don't know how to do anything else."
"She doesn't have anyone else."
"Take a look around, lots of kids don't have anyone!"
"Well, she has me. I'm sorry sir, my decision is final."
"What the hell are you going to do for money? Food? A roof over her pretty little head? There's no map to the heartland anymore, Nolan. The white picket fence doesn't exist in this world anymore."
"I'll do what you've trained me to do; I'll adapt."
