I don't know why I thought of this right upon awakening this morning but there was a serious flaw in The Avengers and the expanded movie-verse they are creating and that is Jane Foster. From what I remember, part of why they wanted Stark and Banner was to track the tesseract and find Loki. Great, both those guys are big brains, makes perfect sense. You know who also would have made sense? Oh, I don't know, how about someone who has made her life's work tracking Einstein Rosen bridges? You can't tell me SHIELD didn't know about her nor that Stark or Banner wouldn't have, given how they knew of each other before meeting. Top scientific minds tend to note other top scientific minds.

Even just acknowledging her within dialog, something like "we can't bring her in as she doesn't have clearance" or some other BS but nope, she was relegated to damsel in distress, "We've moved her to a secure location."

My other vague grumble is what is happening in the Ultimate Comics universe. For those not following along, 616's Galactus has been shoved there and now plans on eating Earth and seemingly destroying the franchise. Wow, big intense feels...wait...this sounds familiar...Yep, that's how they wrapped up the MC2, i.e. Spider-Girl's universe. There really are no new ideas aren't there?

addition? I think you mean edition ;-)

Well, to my knowledge the reason Foster basically wasn't used in Avengers was that Portman was pregnant when shooting was taking place. So, Real life writes the script.

Moving In Universe:
Yes, SHIELD know about her: at the end of Thor, we see that they're providing her with access to certain satellites (which almost certainly aren't civilian in any way, shape or form), as well as having returned all of her equipment they had appropriated earlier in the film to her. And certainly, after the events of Thor, she devotes her life to Einstein-Rosen bridges, but before that? I think she happens to be in the right place at the right time, gets very lucky and then starts really putting her nose to the grindstone. Incidentally, I don't think she's in the same league as Stark and Banner, she doesn't make the leaps of understanding in the same way, or at the same speed as they do.

Clearance BS would have been recognised as such and called out by Tony and/or Bruce (probably Tony) (you can't tell me there wasn't a Foster/Selvig paper in Tony's briefing packet, I won't believe you).

So, I think there is a reason, but it's clearly not anything mentioned above. I think SHIELD are scared of her. I think she's noisy enough in terms of papers, that people would notice if she just vanished, and she's not scared of them. Also, I think she knew Erik was working with SHIELD.
So, if they call her in, they just know they're going to have to answer some very awkward questions about where Erik is, what the shit Loki is doing on Earth, and why the hell they were playing around with the Tesseract in the first place. And I think they don't want to have to answer those questions. Admittedly, they have to answer them all over the course of the film anyway, but, bringing in Foster would, I suspect, have shortened the confrontation considerably. Also see: SHIELD are scared of her. So, they decide to ship her off to somewhere off screen.

Also, as you have noted, Jane's speciality is Einstein-Rosen bridges, but to trace the cube, what they need are Gamma radiation specialists (Banner), not wormhole/spacetime specialists (which is what Foster is). Tony bypassing the mainframe and overclocking the CPUs on SHIELD's servers just speeds things up a bit.

So, that's my take, I hope my scatterbrained ideas make some sort of sense, and looking at it again, I think my last paragraph is probably the most important one, in terms of SHIELD's reasoning.

Incidentally, I should probably put a post up on Marvelways about Thor 2 at some point. Because Feels and Thoughts.

Probably should be knows.

I paid attention and did follow the details of how they were tracking it. (Romanoff's method of bringing Bruce on board "no one knows gamma radiation like you do", as one quote to back me up). That's probably the physicist in me tracking those sorts of things.

As for Erik's experiment, well, that's the thing:

I have opinions about SHIELD and Erik's interactions between Avengers and Thor 2 (like, apparently there were none? seemed that way to me, you given how they don't show up). And, you know, duty of care to one injured (and mental injuries can be just as harmful as physical ones) in the line of service.
So, I'm going to write that post now.
