Things of note...for me at least
Apr. 27th, 2014 02:31 pm I got my hair cut! It's been overdue and feels really short, like maybe too short, but I figure it was so long, short likely feels too short. Either way, too late now.
I finished A Natural History of Dragons and loved it! It did not feature dragons as characters, nor as antagonists, which was a nice change. I love the idea of finding out about these dragons as the series progresses. I also love the main character who is head strong in a society that doesn't see that as a good thing for a woman. But better yet, she has doubts about herself and how ill fitted she is to her society. She knows she isn't a "proper" lady and struggles to find a balance between her wishes and fitting into society.
I've started reading 501st, a Star Wars: Republic Commandos novel focusing on clone troopers after Order 66. The main reason I decided to read it is to see some of what Mandalorian culture is like since the book is set on Mandalore but I am afraid the book may lose me pretty quickly. First problem is that there have been around 10 characters introduced in the first chapter alone. They are mentioned by name only, with no other defining features; no personality ticks to distinguish them. Of the ten, four are women though.
Second problem is I don't like how every sentence seems to require some Mando'a* word or phrase to spice it up. It's as bad as how Firefly would pepper the dialog with Mandarin. I could see if it were a concept that didn't translate to basic or if it were cursing but it doesn't read that way unless the characters are saying shit every time they open their mouths.
I also hate how Star Wars novels always seem to mention non-human sentients by name and not give physical descriptions so the reader can get a picture without having to look online to see what the non-human looks like.
