bjornwilde: (Batwoman Past & Present)

Finished Magic Breaks this morning and damn but this one is a game changer. Without going into spoilers, I loved getting a glimpse of Ghastek's past as well as finding out his birth name, neat developments on Andrea (even if she was woefully absent for most of the story), Roland was just as profound as I was expecting him to be, looking forward to the new direction in Kate and Curran's lives, and I really hope they write more stories with Julie's new school and friends.

On comics, I wish I had a bigger budget cause I really want to read more Image and Dark Horse but my budget is taken up with Marvel and DC titles, admittedly more Marvel to be honest. At this point I'm only reading Batwoman on the DC side, though Batwoman and the Outcasts and Gotham Academy will be joining my pull list. I'm really tempted to cut my ties with Marvel and just go with the Digital Unlimited service so that I can start reading new and fresh characters but I have so much emotional investment with F4, Spider-Woman, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and X-Men.

Serious problems, I know. (laughs at self)

ETA: Thar be spoilers for Magic Breaks in the comments.

Re: Magic Breaks --

OMG ISN'T IT? I am very glad of the author's note letting us know that there are least 3 more books planned, because WOW things really escalated fast in this one. On the one hand, I'm glad to see more of the Roland stuff in the way that we did because I think otherwise things could have gotten to be something of a stagnant stalemate - this really shifts things.

Ted deserves so much worse than he got for throwing people's lives away. I felt so bad for Mauro.

I am VERY interested to see what else we find out about Nick in the next little while. Also interested to see how Hugh reacts to the new state of affairs.

The cookies. What a fabulous final touch.

I hope we get more of Christopher's background, too. I keep feeling as though I should recognize him from somewhere mythologically speaking, but I can't place it.

It'll be interesting to see what develops for Andrea now that Jim's been given the nod to leadership, won't it?

Naeemah. I am very glad we got to see her again.

I'm rereading it now and noticing additional details this time through. The entire first scene with Christopher, for one, where he's so very upset about where Kate's going, how he grabs her hair and warns her about the wolf -- it ALL proves out to actually happen, and he's right about all of it, and uses the hair for the tracking charm. Either he's a regular diviner or he's got something else going on there.

Etc. with all the lead-in about how alphas can retire and grant their blessing.

I hope we'll have more of Andrea next book as well, and I'm interested to see how "retirement" goes for Kate and Curran (and Julie). Especially in light of the claiming and what's likely to be fairly significant fallout from that, too.

Re: wolf betrayal -- guess so! I am just glad it wasn't Derek, or anything along that line. And all things considered, the setup for it to be Jennifer did make sense, and I like the development with Desandra; she's turning out to be much more complex than might have been thought from the last book alone. But it makes sense, otherwise she wouldn't have survived Kral for as long as she did, right?

I did catch the sweater - but not until the reread! I love the attention to detail.

Curran's such a natural leader since age 15, it'll be interesting to see how he deals with NOT being the leader. Kind of a paradigm shift, no?

Can you imagine how Saiman's going to react to all this?
