Jul. 31st, 2014 10:24 amFinished Magic Breaks this morning and damn but this one is a game changer. Without going into spoilers, I loved getting a glimpse of Ghastek's past as well as finding out his birth name, neat developments on Andrea (even if she was woefully absent for most of the story), Roland was just as profound as I was expecting him to be, looking forward to the new direction in Kate and Curran's lives, and I really hope they write more stories with Julie's new school and friends.
On comics, I wish I had a bigger budget cause I really want to read more Image and Dark Horse but my budget is taken up with Marvel and DC titles, admittedly more Marvel to be honest. At this point I'm only reading Batwoman on the DC side, though Batwoman and the Outcasts and Gotham Academy will be joining my pull list. I'm really tempted to cut my ties with Marvel and just go with the Digital Unlimited service so that I can start reading new and fresh characters but I have so much emotional investment with F4, Spider-Woman, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and X-Men.
Serious problems, I know. (laughs at self)
ETA: Thar be spoilers for Magic Breaks in the comments.

Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-07-31 05:39 pm (UTC)OMG ISN'T IT? I am very glad of the author's note letting us know that there are least 3 more books planned, because WOW things really escalated fast in this one. On the one hand, I'm glad to see more of the Roland stuff in the way that we did because I think otherwise things could have gotten to be something of a stagnant stalemate - this really shifts things.
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-07-31 05:55 pm (UTC)I LOVE the shift from series boogie man to creepy In-Law. And I totally hear you on the stagnating thing. I didn't even realize the series was heading that way until the end of this book and how fresh and open the future seems to be now.
I also felt like the book kept getting to an ending and then more stuff kept happening. I read 5/8th of it via audiobook, so didn't have a gauge for how much was left since the iPod was in the glovebox.
So upset about what happened to Mauro and I really want to smack Ted upside the head.
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-08-01 03:44 am (UTC)I am VERY interested to see what else we find out about Nick in the next little while. Also interested to see how Hugh reacts to the new state of affairs.
The cookies. What a fabulous final touch.
I hope we get more of Christopher's background, too. I keep feeling as though I should recognize him from somewhere mythologically speaking, but I can't place it.
It'll be interesting to see what develops for Andrea now that Jim's been given the nod to leadership, won't it?
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-08-01 02:37 pm (UTC)And I want to know more about that Muslim medmage, shapeshifter they had along.
I am very curious about Christopher and am so happy he didn't die.
I nearly rage quiet the book when Raphael looked like he was going to die. True facts.
I am hoping with the next books, Andrea will be around more since they should be focused more on Cutting Edge and less on Pack dynamics. I am hoping Andrea will be the view into what the Pack is up to now. I also want to see how Andrea is with leading the Boudas. I have my ideas but I don't want to go counter to the authors; though I am getting less anxious about doing that thanks to Mulan and Once Upon A Time.
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-08-03 02:57 am (UTC)I'm rereading it now and noticing additional details this time through. The entire first scene with Christopher, for one, where he's so very upset about where Kate's going, how he grabs her hair and warns her about the wolf -- it ALL proves out to actually happen, and he's right about all of it, and uses the hair for the tracking charm. Either he's a regular diviner or he's got something else going on there.
Etc. with all the lead-in about how alphas can retire and grant their blessing.
I hope we'll have more of Andrea next book as well, and I'm interested to see how "retirement" goes for Kate and Curran (and Julie). Especially in light of the claiming and what's likely to be fairly significant fallout from that, too.
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-08-03 05:13 am (UTC)Did you catch the witches given Kate a wool sweater to wear so she didn't get hypothermia in the water cell?
I am very curious to see Kate and Curran's new life. I wonder if Curran will do cases for Cutting Edge? I kind of want to see him have to take orders. ;p
I also wonder if Kate going to have to deal with people calling her out now, like the old gunslinger troupe. Could be fun.
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-08-03 05:30 am (UTC)I did catch the sweater - but not until the reread! I love the attention to detail.
Curran's such a natural leader since age 15, it'll be interesting to see how he deals with NOT being the leader. Kind of a paradigm shift, no?
Can you imagine how Saiman's going to react to all this?

Date: 2014-08-05 09:11 pm (UTC)!!! HOLY CATS, that's going to be an interesting follow-up!
Re: Magic Breaks, minor spoilers
Date: 2014-08-05 09:28 pm (UTC)And Cuddles, the mammoth mule will return. = ] I love Kate's weird animal companions.
