"Hold up," Rosa said to Denise when she first heard the shouts and barking. They were walking through the park now as the man Denise was sure controlled the prostitutes in the neighborhood worked out of a cafe on the other side of the park. Rosa had her doubts. Why would you have your girls work the streets so far from your base? Then again, maybe that's why he had muscle walking the street.
Rosa followed the sounds, with Denise stepping closer to her for protection, before pushing through some bushes.
"Shouldn't' we stay on the path?" Denise whispered.
Rosa waved her hands dismissively. "This'll just take a minute."
They quickly found themselves peeking around a tree at a group of three boys, who were maybe old enough for middle school. They were standing in a semi-circle by a chain link fence, one of those places closed off for park personal or park maintenance. The barking came from in front of them and when one stood back and raised an arm to throw a rock, Rosa could see there was a dog with a paw trapped in the fence. The boy threw the rock, hitting the dog's front shoulder; earning a yelp of pain which was quickly followed by aggressive barking.
Rosa's temper rose again. "How's your aim?" She asked Denise as she bent to pick up a fallen branch.
"What? Okay I guess…," Denise started to answer before realizing what Rosa meant to do. "This is a bad idea. There's three of them!"
"And I'm bigger. Find some rocks and if I get in trouble, start throwing them. Got it?"
"Okay." Denise replied doubtfully. Her doubts proved unfounded as the boys quickly runaway once someone confronted them. Now they just had to calm the dog enough to free it.
"Hey boy," Rosa said soothingly as she knelt a few paces away from the dog, a pit bull mix by the look of him. "We're here to help."
A few minutes later, the dog was free. He ran off as soon as his leg was released but paused once to look back before disappearing.
"That was great and all," Denise said with a smile, cause it had felt good to do something instead of hiding or looking the other way, "And I am glad we saved that dog, but I have homework so can we get a move on?"
"Sure thing," Rosa said with a laugh. And Rosa had meant it too. Unfortunately, a pair of SF's finest were sitting at the park exit the girls were heading for. Rosa grabbed Denise's arm and pulled her into the shrubs again once she spotted the police cruiser. They could just make out the pair working on their paperwork within.
"Damn," Rosa grumbled.
"What?" Denise asked cause they weren't doing anything wrong.
"We can't go out there."
"Why not? We aren't doing anything wrong and they're just sitting there."
Rosa snorted. "You might be able to just walk on by but I can't. I walk out there, I'm going to be stopped and questioned. And we'll lose more time while they call in to see if I have any warrants, and that's if we're lucky and they don't just run us in to do the work at the station."
"You're being silly."
"Really? A girl like me, walking out of the park, at night, all by myself? With my skin? Yeah, they wouldn’t look twice at that," Rosa said wryly. "And what happens when they get a closer look at you? Don’t tell me you haven’t gotten harassed for being how you are. We wait."
