Saw The Mazerunner last night and I'd give it 3 out of five. The story had good potential, but I was more interested in what was happening then connected with the characters. The biggest flaw was the poor treatment of the sole female character. Her role could have been accomplished with a box as far as the plot was concerned. She had no story or agency.

It did leave me curious to read the book.

Her Ladyship wants her 2 hours back though.

I'm sorry that she didn't like it. I thought it was a good movie for what it was, an action movie and I think the fact that the strong cast and good filming made it work better.

According to Alexiscartwheel, the book isn't worth reading as apparently the prose isn't good.

They didn't even need a female character, which is a weird thing to say but while the actress was good, Thomas was enough of a catalyst. Maybe she makes more sense farther on in the series. I found it an enjoyable movie but I did go in expecting an action movie.

(using pup journal because I'm lazy)

I think the gore from the reavers (greavers?) and the bad female character were what turned her off. I did enjoy it but saw ways it could have been better.

I did like that they didn't for any romance into the story and that the phase 2 sort of explained why the helicopters didn't show up sooner. Trying to be vague to avoid spoilers. =]

I can see that, there was a lot of violence though I thought they did a good job of not showing as much gore as they could have.

Yeah, the female character wasn't there, she was well acted but didn't actually have much to do.

It felt like a pretty basic dystopia which had good acting and direction but not the strongest story.

SPOILERS for books

The books are not any better. They read like teenage boys filtered through the lens of a fifty-year-old guy who has not spoken to teenagers in about two decades.

Like Steven King teenagers/preteens only worse.

And then later they paste on romance.

Though in theory there are OTHER LADIES . . . . they just never show up onscreen, really. Except Brenda.

It's . . . vexing.
