Izana's uniform is much like that of a woman's. Still, women's uniforms seem to have jackets that drape to the length of a mini skrit (with leggings beneath), and Izana's uniform has shorts instead of the skirt/drape. Izana does still have the black leggings and white thigh boots.
Nagate bowed in thanks to an obvious ranking person.
I still would like some explanation for why there is a humanoid bear as the dorm keeper.
Introducing oneself seems permissible, even to go so far as to chase someone down in a crowded area.
Nagata also bows to the class. Need to rethink bowing as etiquette. Bowing also seems to be a form of apology for not giving proper respect; e.g. not recognizing a person with a superior position.
The bit with Izana's shifting sex is stated as conceiving. Perhaps the sex shift happens when they wish to have a child? I.e. not tied to attraction like the later canon would suggest.
Culture, or at least the military does still have superstitions. Pilots in units will clasp hands, as in the garde formation, since, "There's a saying. That squad mates who've never touched each other will get into an accident."
And Izana saves Nagate, like they do in each combat they are involved in. At least in the first season if memory serves. Izana and Sam Wilson seem to have common ground.
Pilots salute much like US military but with the fingers of the right hand touching the corner of the right eye, rather then what would be the brim of a hat.
Since Izana (like 99.9% of the population of Sidonia) photosynthesizes and only eats once per week, they do not smell like other humans. In fact canon makes a point of Nagate (the one person who still needs to eat daily) having BO from having to eat so often. Don't know if there is scientific fact to back this or if it is a Japanese belief about diet and body odor. A quick Google Search does support this.
Izana does seem to have a separate changing area than the women.
