It is definitely on another planet and looks to be one that was colonized by Earth more than a thousand years ago. I am so in love with this book! Another awesome thing? The main protagonist is dyslexic and has to be careful about reading, but the author is casual about pointing it out. Like she knows to slow down reading important documents and such, and it doesn't reduce her agency at all! Also, the country all the action is occurring in is in a female dominated society! Like 90% of he men are off at the war front and even those who come back are not in positions of power. This book is everything I had hoped to find with my diverse reading, or normalizing reading project if you will.
It reads as what I think of as sci fantasy, i.e. science fiction that could be fantasy. Other examples of this style are Dune, Star Wars, and the like. It also has a lot in common with Firefly.
