Had an idea for Ahsoka getting her first lightsaber crystal but am still developing the story. Details behind the cut as I want to get out what I have and see if it knocks anything else loose.
Okay, so based on the Clone Wars episode The Gathering and the Rebels episode Path of the Jedi, getting your first lightsaber crystal, aka, kyber crystal, was a big deal and involved a trial of some sort. The trial seemed catered to each person and so it was never the same, and confronting a deep personal fear was a key element of the trial.
Ahsoka's first deep fear I think is being ineffective.
So she is on Ilum with three other younglings who are actually older than Ahsoka. This may become two, cause the third kid isn't forming in my head. Master's Yoda and Plo Koon are also present to witness the success or failure of the younglings, but they are not going to interfere and in fact will be waiting outside of the kyber crystal caves. This is before she becomes Anakin's padawan as she already had her saber when she met him and Obi-Wan in The Clone Wars movie.
Dax is a human female from Corellia and is prideful. She also thinks Ahsoka is too young for the gathering.
Mi-Shal is a female Cerean who wants everyone to get a long and easily makes friends; though she depends on herself and doesn't seek help from others, thus isolating herself somewhat.
I am not sure of the third youngling. Again, I may just make it three instead of four.
So at the start of the gathering, the three run into the caves together. Dax finds a crystal that calls out to her right away but the path is blocked by a boulder. Ahsoka enthusiastically jumps in, helping her shift the boulder with the Force. Unfortunately, the boulder was holding up the ceiling of the tunnel to the crystal and so it collapses. Dax yells at Ahsoka, blaming her, before storming off to find another way around, telling Ahsoka she doesn't need her "help".
Mi-Shal and Ahsoka continue but quickly realize the caves are a maze. Ahsoka spots a hard piece of ice and scratches a symbol on the wall so they may know which way to go. Mi-Shall snorts and says they just need the Force to find their way. Eventually Mi-Shall leaves Ahsoka behind.
Ahsoka wanders for more time, hours, with no hint of a crystal; all the while marking the walls back to the entrance. She starts to despair, the words of Dax and Mi-Shal on repeat in her head. She's too young, doesn't trust the Force like a true Jedi, just makes a mess of things, etc. Ahsoka begins to give in to fear but stops herself, thinking "Yeah, I make mistakes but how else am I to learn? It's better to try than do nothing."
She comes across Dax again, this time with her foot caught under large piece of ice. Dax is too hurt to properly lift the ice and so asks for Ahsoka's help. Ahsoka does so and frees Dax, but Dax is too injured to make it to the exit on her own. Ahsoka pauses because there isn't enough time to help Dax back and come back to search further for her crystal. (The caves are only accessible for a few hours each year as ice blocks the caves at other times.)
Ahsoka decides she can come back next year for a crystal--it just wasn't the right time--and helps Dax to the exit. They make it to the exit just as the ice is reforming and blocking their path, both need to work together to force push the ice and make it out.
Outside, Mi-Shall is waiting with Yoda and Plo Koon. Yoda asks to see their crystals, Mi-Shal and Dax show theirs and Ahsoka admits she didn't find one. Plo asks what happened, and Ahsoka just says she failed.
Master Yoda asks how Dax got out if not for Ahsoka's help? Failure is it to help a fellow jedi? Then asks Mi-Shall how she got out. Mi-Shall admits she followed the marks Ahsoka had left behind and would have been lost otherwise. Ahsoka feels a little better.
Yoda then makes some wise comments about distractions and seeing what we expect to see, when all we need is in our hands, tapping Ahsoka's closed fist, which holds the piece of ice she'd been using to mark her path. Ahsoka opens her hand to find her kyber crystal.
