 I made the mistake of posting an article on my Facebook showing Asian actresses who could've played the Major in Ghost in the Shell instead of Scarlett Johansson. A mistake because it sparked a conversation with a guy whose point seems to be if you don't like it, don't pay for it, but here's why it's okay that they cast Scarlett.

I guess I'm just supposed to not see the movie and not speak about why I don't want to see it in a public place so others can feel good about seeing it.

I think you can see something and still call it out. I thought Cumberbatch made a great Star Trek villain, despite being utterly gutted that it turned out that villain was Khan. If it had been any other name I wouldn't have been so bothered. (Also literally everything else about that film was dreadful).

But my anger is also at the directors and casting people, not the actors themselves. Actors won't turn down work when their bubble could burst at any time.

Totally. Plus, we have no idea if Scarlett is contractually obligated to accept the role. Yes, she is a big name, but she still have a contract.

Her comments about the role could better I'll admit, but again, there could very well be a contract binding what she can say in regards to the movie.

My problem is with the industry and their focus on how white every role and story needs to be. Beyond the issues of representation and fairness, I am just sick of seeing white stories. I say this as a white person. Tell me stories that don't revolve around my experiences!

Yeah, I boycotted the latest Tim Burton film (the peculiar children one) at the point where he said he didn't want any non white people in it. If you're going to be racist at least have a good reason.

That was a mess. I didn't bother with it either.
