Aug. 10th, 2019 07:29 pm Writing has not been working for me. I keep having ideas and inspiration, but as soon as I sit down in from of a keyboard and try to write them down, poof. Or the inspiration or urge to write disappears. Part of it might be my being so woefully behind with my Getyourwordsout pledge, but if so that is entirely in my head.
Strategies for next week.:
- Warm up writing. Write anything for 10-15 minutes, doesn't matter what and it doesn't have to mean anything.
- Having a Textpad file open and just writing thoughts, ideas, or sentences as they occur to me. Finding uninterrupted time is being a challenge, so by doing this I am hoping I won't freeze with the thought of getting deep in a scene and get interrupted.
Based on how my writing and pledge has been going, I think next year I am going to do the habit pledge instead of word count. I am very glad I signed up for this, as it feels like my first honest try at writing beyond RPG, but the spectre of being far behind seems to kill the mood for me. =]
Speaking of RPG, the same issues I am having with writing are also happening with that. I keep thinking of fun threads I could be having but then freezing when I go to start. Or I know what I am going to say in my next tag on an existing thread, but never go back to it. It suck y'all.
I am still thinking of trying out May Parker from "Into the Spider-verse" as well as Walther Davies from the October Daye series. I had been thinking of Cordelia Moonstone from "The Magic Order", or Hannah Vizari from "Rat Queens", as I've been wanting to play someone who does magic, but I think those two are characters I love but don't necessarily have the temperament to play. And then there's still Ben Hargreeves from "Umbrella Academy".
The new to me car is still a dream to drive. It's finally feeling less like a rental and more like my commute beast. Being an electric hybrid and seeing as how I stuck a vinyl sticker of Spider-Woman's logo on it, I've decided to call her Jess.
The adventurer in home buying and ownership has fizzled. The seller decided to go with an As Is offer, which means we're SOL. Our agent says she's going to keep an eye out for other listings for us, but we don't have a lot of capital to throw at this and so we aren't getting our hopes up. In a couple of years, we can expand our search some since Her Ladyship will have graduated high school and we won't need to stay within the school district. A few years past that and we can look into senior community centers, which tend to have cheaper pricing. Oh the fun of growing old.

Re: Writer's Block
Date: 2019-08-11 03:12 am (UTC)This happens a lot, and you want to be careful, because it can engrave itself as a habit faster than you’d believe. As soon as you start associating the two - sit down at blank screen and poof - they’ll happen every time.
Much has been written about writer’s block, but what works for me is to disassociate them. Have a goofy pet project - “Peanuts® As Adults” - and work on that first. Then when it begins to wear thin - or you’re simply ready - switch over. But do that “warm-up exercise” first.
Just a suggestion.

[And isn’t that what Jack Nicholson was doing in The Shining? “All work and no play…” *grin* ]
Re: Writer's Block
Date: 2019-08-11 03:30 am (UTC)That is a *very* good point.
Thinking more on it, I think I'd rephrase to say the warm up doesn't have to be "The Project" but can be anything, from a random scene to just an exercise in What If the character did this instead, to a character outline.
