Marvel and what it takes for me to boycott
So it seems editing an essay by Art Spiegelman, the writer of Maus, to make the essay less political is the last straw for me and Marvel. On one hand I’m glad I do have a line, on the other I’m kind of embarrassed the line amounted to censorship. The CEO being a Trump supported was a straw, and how they treat creative folks was another, but a push to be apolitical just is too much.

I will be buying the last two issues of Champions and I may buy the last two of the Invisible Woman solo, but I’ve cut all other subscriptions. Any Marvel I read will have to be via Comixology Unlimited.

OK, I will likely buy Strikeforce for Jessica, but I don’t know. I’m going to try and stick to my morals.

Cybermage and worn out portrayals of Hades

I discovered and started a new series this weekend, Kelly McCullough’s Webmage series. Well, I’ve had to start on the second book (Cybermancy) because the used book store didn’t have the first. But hey, a long series should be written well enough that you can jump in anywhere and still get the book’s story right? If it continues to be good, I might check out the rest of the series. Still on the fence.

Basic idea is a mix of magic and computer/internet tech, with a Greek stylesheet.

I do have to grumble that Hades is portrayed as a bad guy and evil…which as far as I know isn’t really how Hades was in most of the myths. I know there’s the Hymn to Demeter and how he’s not painted in the best light, especially depending on which translation you run with, but regardless, everyone seems to paint him as bad. Not sure if it’s the Christian influence or the death has to equal bad.

Lilith St. Claire and what was that book about?
Speaking of books on the fence, I read Night Shift by Lilith Saintcrow based on Seanan McGuire’s top ten urban fantasy series you should be reading, and I don’t know. I know I read the book, Goodreads keeps bugging me to write a review, but I don’t remember much of the story beyond bad ass in a leather jacket. Like I don’t even remember what the super natural elements were. They could’ve been boggarts for all I know.

Oh wait, it was demons. The book was written well, it just didn't strike me a fresh. You know?

Songs for the Dead and the necromancer that could
In happier, OMG this book is awesome, I discovered a new comic series I am definitely paying money for once I can afford the next issues or collection. It’s called Songs for the Dead and is a fantasy comic book with a two women lead; a necromancer who wants to do right and a cynical rogue type. Together they fight crime...actually, I don’t know about that part. They do escape a robber baron. Great art and great characters, as well as a great story in the one issue I’ve read.

Discovered via Women Write About Comics, which described it as Pushing Daisies by way of Tamora Pierce.

Words in August
August was the most productive month I’ve had to date in writing. I wrote over 4,000 words. I’m hoping September can be much the same. Just taking it day by day.

I think a big part of this was telling myself that it was okay to slow down and take time to write things.
