Nov. 27th, 2017 08:25 amLong weekend with lots of good family time. Thanksgiving was a nice change. The past decade, we've spent it with my wife's mother, who, at her best, is a ball of stress who projects that stress to others. This year, due to a falling out which required us to move, she didn't even bother with an invitation, so it was just my wife and daughter. We had complete control of the menu, which was awesome as the Teen has some strict dietary requirements the M-i-L didn't do much to support aside from "it's up to the teen to resist the tempting food she can't eat, not me to not have such food present." She did buy food that was safe for the teen, she just also had the "bad foods" present. Seriously, what teen is going to be able to ignore ice cream?
We were also able to relax and enjoy the day. Cooking when we felt like it rather than this Iron Chief-esk rush to get the food on the table by 5pm. I think we finally ate around 7 or 8, which was fine. And we didn't have too much food and no space to put it, so we didn't end up over eating!
Wins all around.
Saw Howl's Moving Castle on the big screen yesterday and had fun. We did agree that Spirited Away was the best of the films we'd seen during the six months of the Studio Ghibli film fest. Howl's was fun, don't get us wrong, Spirited just had a stronger story and art. I also don't know that I agree with the film's choices in removing one of Sofie's sisters, her sisters checking in on her, and the hints that Sofie had her own magic, as in the book. Still, a great film.
The Teen and I watched the first four episodes of Runaways and both give our strong approval. The Teen is grumpy there aren't more episodes yet. I do wish they'd have left Molly as younger, as in the comics, but she is only a year or so older, so she still reads as the kid of the group. The casting for Chase wasn't working for me when I saw all the promos, and I do feel like they've shifted his clique a bit, from grunge/stoner to jock, but the actor won me over. Over all, the show isn't flawless and has a few problems (there is an attempted drug induced rape which blind sided us) but I am happy with the work. Nico and Gert are flawless, as is Karoline.
I've been reading the Magnus Chase books and loving them. Almost through with book two and have a hold on book three from my library. I love Samirah, and had some fun playing her in PFSB, but I'm a little nervous of possibly playing her seriously, as much as I may want to. In the first book, she seems casually Muslim but in book two, it is much clearer that she is a believer and I don't know enough of Islam that I worry about doing it wrong. Also, she is a teen and wears a hijab, and I am finding now sources for a PB. Plenty of movies or TV shows with actresses wearing hijabs, even found one wearing a green hijab, but they are all in their thirties. As much as Hollywood tries to pass off adults as teens, I don't want to.

Date: 2017-11-27 10:32 pm (UTC)Our Thanksgiving was good, too! We had a short trip to Oregon for the actual day, and managed some time with family (which is all local for me) afterwards, too.
