So expanding on Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse....spoilers behind the cut for a neat surprise the movie managed, which even now is being kept pretty quiet.
OK, so like I said Wednesday, I loved the movie and the animation and the soundtrack and the story. I was legit 98% satisfied. The only quibble I have is how fat is treated in the movie.
Elder Spider-Man has a beer gut, which is awesome. Only problem is he only seemed to have it when there was a joke to be made. After the joke...funny, the beer belly disappeared and his typical comic book physic returned. I could be wrong about this--the action could have easily obfuscated things--but I was looking.
The other bit about fat, and this is a spoiler, was the surprise Doc Ock. In this movie, Ock is a she, Olivia Octavius and she is willowy and wiry. Given all other incarnations of Doc Ock tend towards chubby or fat, I feel it was out of place to not have her carry weight. Yes, this would risk the fat girl is evil trope, but it's still something I noticed.
To be clear here, I mean fat in a body positive way and not something that needs to be hidden or corrected.
Still, I *LOVED* Olivia! My muse brain keeps thinking of how I would play her, which means she might show up in a sandbox somewhere.
I also *LOVED* Gwen and am so ready for the sequel, which is already billed as all Spider-Women! Yes, Gwen, Jessica, and Cindy Moon at hitting the big screen!
I did love that there were no jokes about Wilson Fisk's large frame, except I think the Spider-Man original to Miles's reality might have at the start of the movie.
