Spotted over on Facebook, a friend posted a Tumblr screencap* which basically says, "Write marginalized characters but don't write about marginalization unless you experience it." Which pretty much is my goal for writing. Of course, a couple of white men are taking exception to this saying it's nuts or BS. I say they are white men based on their profile and pictures. I tried pointing out that the idea isn't that you can't write about things outside your experience or that you can't write these characters, in fact the idea is that you should, just that you shouldn't write of the marginalized life experience if you haven't lived it. Write stories that have marginalized people, but don't write stories about being marginalized unless you are from that marginalized group or have direct experience. I would add "or unless you spend a lot of time researching and ask yourself why you want to tell that story."

The two people insist on being obtuse and crying "Well I guess I can't write a story about being a boy wizard or a Supreme Court justice" and I just walked away. A privilege that I am able to do so I know.

I'm also seeing people rediscover how the CEO of Marvel is a big Trump supporter and conservative. I've know this for a while but I guess I'd let it slip, or perhaps I knew he was conservative and a Republican, but the Trump support seems new to me. And of course there are cries of "How do you like your Marvel now" and such guilting. I get it, I really do. But I can't help feeling like it's not the right answer?

I mean, I want to support the kind of content I want to see in the world. I want to support comics written by women and other marginalized groups. I want to read about super heroes that aren't white men. And I feel like if those comics are not bought, they won't be made. So no, I'm not going to stop reading Champions, or Ghost Spider, or the other books I buy.

Anyway, I guess my point is do the best you can but realize it's not black and white out there.

*Why do FB people do this and yet look down on Tumblr?
